It’s been widely reported that by 2025 BT will have switched off the outdated technology of ISDN fixed line networks in favour of an IP based model for voice communication.

Why is the IDSN being switch off?
ISDN is a technology that has been around since the 1980’s which allowed voice and data to be transmitted over digital lines. Ground-breaking in its time, it has now been surpassed by the rise of voice over IP (VoIP) which is more flexible, cheaper and, more importantly, faster!
Why is VoIP the preferred choice for phone calls?
As internet speeds have increased significantly thanks to fibre internet connections, this has driven BT’s decision to eradicate the IDSN lines.

BT first announced the switch off in 2015, allowing 10 years for businesses to make the transition. - Review your current ISDN contract
This may seem an obvious point, but do not renew your current contract and in fact check when your contract is up for renewal. This may help you choose the date you should plan to migrate by.
- Consider what you need for your business
Think about how your team work. Do you need ultimate flexibility that VoIP allows you? Or can you consider SIP lines that are the perfect halfway house that will support a slower transition.
- Plan a migration date
With some areas already on stop-sell, this may be a key driver in your decision to make the move. Regardless of that, you should not leave this until 2025 as it will limit your opportunity to plan and be ready for the ISDN switch off.
